Fluids exert forces on structures as they flow over them. This can be a pressure differential which causes a valve to open, dynamic forces caused by vortex shedding, or structural loads caused by winds, for example. PMI performed some of the pioneering work with FSI many years ago by developing routines to pass pressure and displacement data back and forth between Fluent and Algor. Since that time we have continued to perform a wide variety of FSI analyses including predicting structural vibrations in tube bundles, predicting the dynamic response of a wide variety of valves, analyses of naval vessels and predicting the dynamic response of tanks subjected to earthquake loads. These analyses have been performed with all of the analysis codes in our suite of tools.
